Labor Day 2009 weekend in Hunter Mountain

welcome-to-hunter-smll1Due to a partial weekend working, we only had Friday night and Saturday to ourselves this Labor Day so we needed to stay somewhat close to home on this last “official” weekend of the summer.  As a result, the destination of choice was easy, the beautiful Catskill Mountains!

We decided on the charming Fairlawn Inn fairlawn-inn-smll3B&B in Hunter.  We stayed in the Glenwood Room glenwoodrm-smll2on the main level.  This cozy Victorian style room was warm and inviting with its brass bed and assorted Victorian décor!  The Inn itself has so much charm and beauty that you become lost in the ambience swept away to another place and time.  The gourmet homemade breakfast was superb!  Each table setting was uniquely eloquent offering individual carafe of fresh brewed coffee.  An assortment of fresh fruit and muffins started our breakfast followed by a choice of specials.  We highly recommend the 4 cheese omelet.    dining-room-at-fairlawn-inn-smll fairlawninn-smll 4cheeseomelet-smll

We dined at the Bistro Brie & Bordeaux French restaurant in Windham. (BestOf Hudson Valley Maagazine 2008)  bistro-brie-bordeaux-smllTo start we delighted our taste-buds with assortment of French cheese and seasonal fresh fruit.  of-french-cheese-and-seasonal-fresh-fruit-smllThen I enjoyed the Penne Rigatoni Pomodoro (Penne, Tomatoes, Basil, Garlic, and Olive Oil) while my honey savored his Steak Frites à la Bordelaise (Grilled New York Steak, served with Homemade French Fries and Green Beans).  And yes, you know how we feel about dessert so we shared (as we normally do) the most delectable
Traditional Crème Brûlée before heading back to the Inn for a comfy & relaxing evening. penne-rigatoni-pomodoro-smll steak-frites-a-la-bordelaise-smll traditional-creme-brulee-smll

First stop was at Traphagen Honey & Gourmet Shop trapagen-honey-gourmet-shop-smll1located at the end of the Village of Hunter on the Right across from The Office of All Service’s Hunter-Windham.

Unexpectedly while passing the entrance to Hunter Mountain we came across a sign that read “Skyride Today” and just as unexpectedly I agreed to take the lift to the top! looking-at-the-top-of-hunter-from-the-bottom-smllThe view, as you can imagine was simply breathtaking!  view-from-top-of-hunter-smllWhile I’m not a skier I would highly recommend taking the lift to the top to enjoy all the beauty of the spectacular views, seasonal plants (like the brilliant Devil’s Paintbrush we saw) devils-paintbrush-smlland more.  I can only imagine what the Fall Foliage must look like (shih, perhaps we’ll take another trip). view-smll view-from-top-of-hunter-mt-smll We even saw the Fairlawn Inn from the lift-amazing! fairlawn-inn-bb-from-lift-at-hunter-mt-smll

Driving along route 23A enjoying the scenic views and peaceful countryside was both relaxing and special.  Special because it was another of our very famous “day-trips” that we love so much!  We came upon the Mountain Candle shop in Tannersville  mt-shop-smllwhich of course was calling my name so we just had to stop and see what special treasure we would uncover.  Wooden roses!  The most beautifully crafted wooded roses were just waiting for us inside!

Searching for a place to pull off and do a little fishing we came across the North-South Lake off Route 18 in Haines Falls. north-south-lake-haines-falls-ny-smll While we didn’t catch any fish, we did manage to catch a little sunburn, and an ice cream for dessert (LOL).  We did discover that boat rentals are available; perhaps our next visit will allow enough time for us to row around the lake.

As always, I wish you days filled with happiness and “wonder” – take the time to “wonder” what it is that made you smile today)!

Darn, my honey and I were just in Hunter Mountain last weekend.  Sounds like this year’s Mountain Jam V is going to be a great event!  While we could consider drive up on Saturday but we would have to drive back as my honey has to work bright & early on Sunday morning.  For those of you lucky enough to attend–enjoy!

Out and About over Memorial Day weekend!

Happy Memorial Day to everyone!  Yes, Memorial Day serves as the unofficial start to Summer for most of us and it is so much too.  I hope we all took some time this weekend to remember and be grateful to the men and women who have served and for those serving now – to those men and women I say “thank you.”

Saturday started out as an ordinary day. My honey had his annual meeting of his model airplane/gliders club in Orange County.   He has been building and flying for nearly 45 years.

Sunday was off to church then spent a great afternoon at my parents working in and around the yard!  Sitting on my parents lower patio  which on located on a lake with the majestic the Hudson River serving as it’s background.  It’s funny because my Mom and I were saying (which we have said many times in the past), people pay a lot of money to go on vacation and have views like this for a week or two, how luck we are to have this beauty in our backyard!

After leaving my parnets late Sunday afternoon, we decided yes you gueesed it, taking one of our very special “day-trips” but leaving Sunday night.  So we headed out toward Hunter Mountain in the Catskill Mountains.

Thanks to a quick Google search before we left, we found the Forester Lodge in Hunter.

For a simple overnight the lodge met our needs.  The only thing I would like to see more of in the Catskills is pet friendly hotel/motels.

Then Monday morning and we were off for a day in the mountains.  First on our list was of course breakfast!  What is it about breakfast out of town that makes you more hungry for breakfast when you are out of town than when at home LOL!.. So, we headed to Windam to the Catskill Mountain Country Store & Restaurant - what can I say except WOW!   The food was GREAT! So many wonderful items to choose from we’re just going to have to go back! The service was outstanding and the country store was adorable!

Next on our fabulous “day-trip” was fishing the Schoharie Reservoir.  We found a wonderful little spot just off In-Take Road where we could spend a few hours fishing and enjoying the splendar of the mountains.  RoadSo while we used our special new “trout worms” we still didn’t catch anything but some sunburn!  After a while we decided to head start towards home as we were approximately 2 1/2 hours aways from home.  Driving down 145 headed toward Route 23 — passing and or going through Prattsville, Middleburgh, Leeds, Durham and East Durham to mention a few.   Totally forgeting that this weekend was the Irish Festival in East Durham.  Being dissappointed that we missed the weekend’s Irish Festival I made myself feel better by purchasing a great new Irish/county Cd at the great Ireland Gift Shop on 23 in E. Durham NY.

I so love the Catskills!  So many wonderful things to see/do, places to visit and wonderful people met along the way!  So I will leave you all for tonight wishing you all blessed and peaceful week ahead!
